If you have the standard 18-55 kit lens, you are basically good at the short end. So you need something to move into the telephoto realm.
A very good and inexpensive choice is the Canon 55-200 f/4.5-5.6 USM. Another option for a little more money is the Canon 55-250 IS. Either would be a good complement to the 18-55.
Flash? The Canon 430EX is the best choice for the “average” shooter that only uses the flash occasionally. I prefer the 580EX, but I am rarely without the flash mounted and ready.
