Is the Canon EOS Rebel XS Digital SLR Camera a good buy? or should I wait?

I want to buy a good DSLR camera. the Canon EOS Rebel XS Digital SLR Camera is the cheapest cannon I could find at $600. Is it a good buy? or should I wait to save up more money and buy a more expensive one?

I’m going to be taking a photography course soon and I hope I can get into professional photography afterwards. A DSLR isn’t necessary for the course so I can wait if I should.

I am still debating between the Cannon XS vs. Nikon D60 or D40 myself, so can’t help you with the decision. However, I have found the Rebel XS on sale for $499. If you have a Fred Meyer store near you, it’s on sale for a few more days I believe.

If you want to stay with canon i would either get that one and buy more lenses or flashes. Or i would go up to canon rebel XSi

I agree if you dont care about brand i would go to nikon d40 great entry level i use it because its so light.

It is a good camera but I would suggest save more $100 and get Canon Rebel XSi
here are the differences between the XS and the XSi:
    – The XSi has more megapixels at 12.2MP while the XS is 10.1MP.
    – For JPEG, the XSi can continuously shoot at 3.5 fps while the XS can do 3.0 fps. But for RAW, the XSi is much better at 3.5 fps while the XS can only do 1.5 fps.
    – The LCD monitor of the XSi measures 3.0 inches while the XS has a smaller screen at 2.5 inches.
    – The XSi has a 9-point AF system while the XS has only a 7-point.
    – The XSi has Spot metering while the XS does not. Both have Evaluative, Partial, and Center-weighted metering, however.
    – The XSi RAW is 14-bit while the XS RAW is 12-bit.
    – XSi has Highlight Tone Priority while XS does not.
    – The viewfinder of the XSi provides 0.87x magnification while the XS provides 0.81x.

Most classes in photography start out with the student using a 35 mm SLR (or some film camera), so it would be premature buying ANY DSLR, Canon or Nikon entry level or professional.

The less money you spend on the camera body, the more money you will have for lenses … the core of any professional camera system.
